Favourite Thing: Tekkon Kinkreet

tekkon01_700x5221

Both a movie and graphic novel.  The graphic novel came first, by Taiyo Matsumoto.  I started it with reluctance; I though it was just another violent fantasy comic, another ‘beat things up’ and ‘beat ‘em up again.’

But nooooooo, this shizz is amazing.  I have to go back and reread the book, it has such depth that it requires revisiting.  And the art!!  So original.  I am moved like a newfound beat on a dancefloor.

Then I watched the movie.  Lately I just let it play while I work on a painting.  It isn’t your typical anime by any means.  It’s art.  The producers held true to Taiyo’s aesthetic and story, and made it breathe, so I’m in love…

What I realized last night is that it’s a lullaby.  That the bad monsters have a way of disappearing and what is important, anyway??  I’ll let the story tell you.  Here’s a preview:

whot?

leafmealone

That’s what he’s saying to me.  Like “Whot?  Whot is this thing I stubbed my toe on?  Whot?”  Or “Whot?  Whot breath?  Whuhhhhhhhhtt?”

Or, something like that…  And yet he is still jovial.  Or something like that.

Girls of a Diffo Colour

diffcolourgirl

Sometimes I take sketches into Photoshop to see what comes of it.  I did this awhile ago, for Bag Lunch.  It never made it into the site, but ideas are patient; they come out when things are ready.

So this here image – I was into this eighties spray paint aesthetic, which seems to be having a continual resurgence on the fringes of popular culture.  Below is the original sketch.

Ghost Lodge

lodgecroppedpost

My lovely sis is a writer.  She’s been tapped for a book on Alaskan ghost stories.  The book is now written, and lucky for me, they were a bit short on images.  So she tapped me to illustrate a couple of places where AK ghosts come in from the cold.  This is a lodge, and right now I can’t remember what it’s called.  Get back to you on that.

Pencil and ink, and I colored the images in Photoshop.  I’ve got another image to do, I’ll post it soon.  Below are more rough versions of the illustration.  I liked the grey one, as it is kind of ‘spooky.’  I could see a ghost hanging out there.

Pretty Head

sculpt2

Did this a few years ago, when I dabbled in sculpture.  It’s another first piece, out of soapstone.  She’s about eight inches tall, and yeah, she’s for sale.

Ask if you are interested.  And no, you can’t take it with you in the bathtub.  Well, you could, if you bought it.  It won’t suds you up though, so we’re clear.

2 From the Vault

first-painting

This one is my first painting ever.  You know, besides the stuff along the way for school projects…  But as an artist, sitting down to paint, this is it.

It came out after my first trip to Europe.  Two months of France, Italy, Greece, Amsterdam, and England.  It just came out.  Maybe its time to head back over there.

My dear friend Carrie came in after it was finished and said ‘That’s mine.’  So it is.  It’s up on her office wall, and it’s big too.  A good 4 x 6 feet.

threshhold

The second belongs to Carrie’s bff Meghan, who is a totally good friend, rad person, and frickin’ brilliant.

I called it ‘Thresh-Hold,’ and its up on Meghan’s wall in Bogota, Colombia.

This didn’t come out as easily as the first; it was a journey of decisions and almost mistakes then realizing, ‘ohh, I like it that way.’  Learning curve balls.

Going, or That Boy Didn’t Know What He Had…

its-going-or

This is what happens to most paintings if I hold onto them for awhile.  The former I did like, it captured what I wanted to say.

And then I went and excited myself and got more into it.  By excited, I mean lines and ideas, enunciating through space; that sort of thing.  I started it in Alaska, my second trip there in 2008; I had a really good time with friends, family, and Alaska outdoors.  It was so cool, I even began a romantic process with a guy, and things started off smoothly, intelligently.  My third trip, for New Year’s, started off on the same notes – however, it ended with a thud (my heart fell on the floor), as the romantic guy lost his nerve and broke up with me right before I left, not even an hour after telling me how much he cared about me.  He says he got scared… and I learn how to forgive, and move on.

So coming back to this painting could have been a cheap shot to my guts, like “ohh, man, wtf?”  Instead it was just a reminder of how great I am doing.  Holler on that, yo.

It’s $150 dollars, plus shipping.
