Senta, Glad I Met Ya

I’ve  found inspiration from the East again and again.  Tokyo street fashion is some of the most alive I’ve ever seen, the shapes people can take.  It embodies one of my philosophies, that fashion is costume.  We’re all wearing it, we all choose (ok, except our babies) what we put on our bodies, even if we say we don’t have a choice.  Even if we pick it off the floor, your choice.  That is what style is to me.

My semester at fashion school was disappointing in that, as I had two teachers keep telling me that I wasn’t creating fashion, but costume.  I found their evaluation of my creative process to be very short-sighted.  So I left before I submitted myself to a herding of the bright young things into following a form that is out of sync with what any fashion magazine will tell you what fashion is about.  And, I left with straight A’s, I might add.  Peace to them.

About Benjamin Allen Ellis

Some phoenix mythologies talk of the soul's hierarchy in terms of birds. The eagle being our pinnacle, the phoenix right below, constantly burning and dying and rebirthing in order to find itself born eagle. Since 2000, and my first public art show, I've used the Phoenix as a rallying cry for myself to take hold of what I want and keep 'rebirthing' until I get it. After eight years, it was time to consciously move on up. Hey - I'm goin' eagle.
