The Glass is Half Built…

justbabiesman

…so it can get FILLED.  These are shots I did yesterday, continuing in the vein of Sketchy Canvas, a series  of works I did years ago in AK with photographer Joseph Brazenfield.

I approached Robert Cortlandt with the idea, and he jumped on it.  I love enthusiasm, and he has a great eye and is a hard worker.  We’ll be shooting a couple more times this week; as you can see, things got grainy, so these were a nice test run.

This is the process at times.  Frustratingly… non-linear.  You are so close, but something comes up.  I have more work I’ve done recently that illustrates just what I’m talking about.  Sometimes I wonder if it’s me, something I’m doing that makes things so buggy.  Better to just accept the process and roll with the punches, work it out, GET BETTER.

Head Out, Border Out

09NQAFtitle

So, I’m dancing with Colombian Soul tonight for the second night of the Border Out Festival, a celebration of Queer Immigrant Artists.  I… perform in a whole new way.  Hopefully vid will be captured, and I’ll post before too long.

Below is a photo of some of the people I dance with, with Colombian Soul.  Great peeps, working hard and dancing with others is a really amazing way to know other people…

AKFO Flyers…

The flyers for the shows in ’04 and ’05… first up ’04:

AKFOI

There were four, and true to form, a little puzzle, forming AK when put together.  Of course, that’s not all.  If you can figure out the clues, they will lead you to an ancient Alaskan treasure where you will also find secrets that will usurp the power of corporate entities everywhere and restore justice to commerce worldwide.  So, look closely…

AKFOI2

AKFOI3

If you haven’t figured it out, that’s ok.  I’ll tell ya one day over coffee or somethin.

The following year, in ’05, things got even more interesting!

AKFOII

I found pictures of naked mannequins online, and dressed them up in Photoshop!  I found inspiration from the latest looks from Roberto Cavalli, Viktor & Rolf (check out their site, it’s awesome!), Sean John, and this awesomely outfitted salesgirl I spied at Nordstrom one day…

No secrets here, just fun fun fun.  Cheers!

A Close Wind

Round 2… this one more detailed in the cut-out.  Diggin’ it, too.  Afforded the possibility of really using the space available on a T… as I’ve been saying, T-shirts are the canvas of the new millenium.

I’m so excited for all this.  Years ago, a dear friend took the time to attempt to put my art on t’s, and none of it worked very well.  An almost, almost, but the materials weren’t that good in the long run, so I shelved the idea for awhile.  Luckily, new and improved in so many ways came along and things are lookin’ up.  Here’s to patience and perseverance and magic.

Camiseta

… which means t-shirt.

Look familiar?  Scroll down.

This is the second in a new direction and process of transferring my art to t’s.  So far, so good!

When I was 19, going to school in South Dakota (I know, I know, you say ‘what?’), I’d daydream with my friends about making t-shirts.  I had all these characters and ideas… a guy with a mushroom on his face, his name was Fun Gi.  Har har, get it?  He was fun.

So, this steady climb with t’s these past few years, stenciling and screen printing, now these transfers.  Let me know what you think, please.   Feedback always welcome.  Cheers.

From the Vault: Shows in 02

dreamactionshow

The above was the promo I made for a show after I came back to art.  My apartment burned, all of my art supplies and sketchbooks I had – up in flames.  It was, a big deal…  My cat survived, thank God.

It came about after a night of some soul searching, and telling the universe, “Hey, all this pressure is b.s., so I will no longer call myself an artist.”  I said it outloud, “I am no longer an artist.

The next night I came home (I was at my b.f.’s) to a home, well, in ruins.  Luckily, the fire had burned itself out (thank you, weather-stripping), and only my kitchen flamed out.  Smoke damage and the heat of it all, though, provided most of the damage (ever seen a melted microwave?).  No one had called the fire department, I was the first to.

And they couldn’t figure out how the fire started (I didn’t use oils or turpentine).  Neither could the insurance people.  Neither could my dad, a 23 year vet for the AFD.  So… be careful what you wish for, and if what you wish for comes out, its a blessing, even if it is a rough one.  My life changed after that.  Not enough to not be an artist, though, a few months later, I had my a-ha moment and came back.  Thanks, Lynne!

rephnx1

It was a word puzzle/collage, and five different flyers.  I’ve done that a lot with my flyers…

rephnx2

I had this glass piece on a necklace… a piece of an Aveda bottle recycled, just a rectangle of glass with ‘re’ on it.  It occured to me one day, the prefix ‘re’ and phoenix mean the same thing.  What does a phoenix do?  Reborn.  Rebirth.  Resurrect.  Renew.  So, re-phoenix.  Me as an artist, back then, resurfacing till I get my shizz the way I want it.  I’m a lot closer these days, in fact I know what I want, hence, goin Eagle.  Doin’ it.

Gusty, Ain’t He?

wynd

I got inspired by some of the looks Rick Owens was showing these past few seasons, kilts with slacks… they’re enough to get a man airborne…

I sit in the corner with my pad and pens; it’s doing me good to just create without an endpoint in mind.  Just do, no need to think it so through.  End with a ‘yo.’

New Definition of ‘She’s Hot’

shehotlighting

Jest sumthin’ I’m workin on.  A pencil sketch cum black ink, then breakin’ out the markers.

When I lived in Portland, back in ’03-04, I got really into markers.  Loads of pages of work, somewhere…
