Mad Mermaid Stencil

If I was a mermaid in this day and age, I figure I would be a bit pissed right now.  And by that, not drunk.  Current global circumstance may feed a desire to toss a few beers back (although I don’t know how that would be done underwater, but I am sure some college student somewhere has figured it out) because of the huge oil spills taking place in the US and China.

I would definitely come to the surface and say… ‘Stop it.’

That’s what I would say, among other things, and try to find a better way than the ways been doing.  That we all been doing and taking part of.  If anything is going to change, its going to take all of us, not blaming a select few and waiting for someone else to come up with a different answer.  There are more and more options out there; we as a human race are totally capable of getting better at this thing called life on this place called Earth.

Who knew a stencil could conjure up so much?  Go mermaids!

I am glad to be getting back to stenciling.  I love the play of space, of letting the viewer fill in the rest of the picture.

I used to draw very simply, with as few lines as possible.  It was all based on my philosophy that leaving space in a picture gives the viewer space to fill in with his or her imagination.  Its one of the best ways to activate a conversation between myself and the masses.  What people bring to those spaces is sacred, too.  It’s as much them as it ever would be me.

One last image… a sky light.

About Benjamin Allen Ellis

Some phoenix mythologies talk of the soul's hierarchy in terms of birds. The eagle being our pinnacle, the phoenix right below, constantly burning and dying and rebirthing in order to find itself born eagle. Since 2000, and my first public art show, I've used the Phoenix as a rallying cry for myself to take hold of what I want and keep 'rebirthing' until I get it. After eight years, it was time to consciously move on up. Hey - I'm goin' eagle.
