Consistency produces results.

History

I’ve maintained a consistent exercise program for 24 years. I was lucky enough to start when I was 11, thanks to my dad, a fitness buff.
Over the years, my exercise regimen has included everything from exercising with weights, cardio & swimming for 3 hours per day six days a week to weekly Hip Hop dance classes. I spent 10 years as a competitive springboard diver, studied gymnastics (specifically the trampoline), and have spent the last 11 years studying yoga (Iyengar, Ashtanga, Anusara, Svaroopa, Bikram, Vinyasa, Power). The last year has found me in a lot of dance technique classes, which I incorporate into yoga technique and weight lifting. I find the synthesis to be very effective in creating a balanced muscle tone and physique.

My experience has led me to believe that it is not necessary to spend hours and hours at a gym or treadmill. With good form, posture, and a high level of intensity (which is specific to each of us) results are achieved through one hour two to three times per week.

Instruction in your home means yoga, calisthenics and some dance technique; unless you have weights of your own, which we can incorporate into an effective program. Yoga by itself will produce benefits, believe me.

Philosophy

I believe in core strength. It is essential to maintaining a quality of life. It plays into every aspect of physical life when you get into it. Posture affects well-being affects health affects physical appearance affects posture… and so on.
So core strength comes into everything I do, from weight training to yoga to other disciplines and techniques, from Pilates to Calisthenics to Dance. I believe in form first, for if you have to ‘cheat’ to do an exercise, then you aren’t doing too well for yourself. Look around a gym, do you see people sticking their chins out or scrunching up their bodies to finish an exercise? Then they aren’t really helping themselves. It is actually, in the long term, causing harm. So, use less weight.
BUT, that means you will have a more effective workout, which means you are working more of your body (even your abs when you are doing bicep curls properly), which will raise your metabolism higher so you will actually burn fat/tone up more quickly. And you will be training your body to maintain healthy posture in all kinds of conditions, which looks good and feels good. Form feeds core strength, and vice versa.
So whether it be yoga, weights, or a combination of both, you will feel a workout. If it feels easy, I say, you aren’t doing it right. I’m gonna keep you to that, and you will, given a few months, really start to see benefits.

Ben is a great instructor. He is gentle when needed and makes you want more and more. “Oakland bootie” well, you will only know what that means when you take yoga from him. I am thankful to have found him and in 6 weeks I feel so different. I can’t wait to see what happens in 6 more weeks! Thank Ben!
